    OK I haven't recently read this - it was a few years ago, but it is a landmark book from a very interesting author. (*****)

  • Markus Zusak: The Book Thief

    This is a great example of storytelling. A different (if overplayed at times) angle means Death is narrating the story of Liesel a spunky girl who lives in Germany in the Second World War. I didn't always like the style of prose/writing and it took me a while to get into it, BUT, I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this book. I loved the characters and interactions, the way such a difficult time is narrated, the 'human-ness' of it all. Sadness, a childhood interrupted - and yet not. Ultimately thought-provoking and uplifting. (****)

Biography

WHO ARE EMMA & DUNCAN?

I like to think we're (relatively!) normal people… We’re originally from England (Duncan’s a Northerner and I’m from the South).

We went to university, graduated, went to work for big companies, moved around a bit until we met at work. We got married, moved from suburbia to a commuter town and traveled (1.5 hours each way) to work in the City of London, England every day for 5 years.

After months (maybe years) of complaining about the unreliable transport system, busy city and giving our lives to our jobs we decided to move to Vancouver, Canada - for a better quality of life. Well, it was the same trap. I started a business (Simplicity Life Coaching Ltd.) and Duncan went back to work. The commute may have been less, and for me at least - the work more meaningful - but somehow this WASN'T it. We still never seemed to have enough TIME. We wanted more space, more peace and quiet, more nature, more community, more fun and more time to do what we love.

And so it was that we visited Salt Spring Island for a long weekend one February. There was rain, snow and a windstorm that knocked the power out (AND meant we had no water - the B&B had an electric well), and we fell in love (with Salt Spring...). It was that weekend that we began our move to Salt Spring - even if only in our heads...

WHY THE BLOG?

This blog documents Emma & Duncan's attempt to:

* Leave the 9-5 and 'normal' societal expectations behind
* Live our deepest values AND
* Experience 'country life'

You'll see how we cope with 5 acres of land, battle with our mental gremlins and (hopefully!) the joy that comes from trying to live the life of your dreams!

This is OUR Salt Spring adventure!
